LINX Attains Network Milestone

London, United Kingdom - (The Hosting News) - December 2, 2008 - The London Internet Exchange, reaching its 300th member, is the first Internet exchange point to connect so many networks together.

John Souter, LINX Chief Executive Officer remarked, ''In addition to the major UK and global ISPs, the LINX membership includes e-commerce and DNS specialists plus content delivery and research and education networks. This makes LINX a compelling place for international peering. Our latest members broaden this still further with VoIP, IPTV and gaming services becoming more popular.''

LINX has added 50 new members representing a 19% increase in membership in just eleven months. This rise is indicative of the importance networks attach to peering despite the significant drop in transit pricing over the last decade.

The LINX membership has become highly international, with networks from more than 45 countries represented. This is up from just 16 countries in the year 2000 when there were fewer than 100 members at the exchange.

Over the last quarter LINX has been bolstered by the connection of a number of major content and DNS providers plus the first European peering presence of a leading social networking site.

LINX also boasts an impressive set of technical statistics, with over 600 member Ethernet ports connected, more than 140 of them at the fastest possible rate, 10GigE.

LINX is a mutual organization owned and consisting of approximately 250 Internet service providers and content delivery service providers. The company was was formed in 1994 when five ISPs - PIPEX, BT Internet Services, Demon Internet, Eunet GB and UKERNA/JANET - recognised that there were considerable operational benefits to exchanging traffic between their networks at the same tele-hotel where they all had facilities. It allows competing networks to exchange Internet traffic cost-effectively, bringing speed and efficiency benefits to their customers. The LINX platform enables access to Internet routes, reaching more countries, than any other public peering point. LINX operates in a regulatory and policy environment that is supportive of network operators and the Internet community, which it strives to maintain and reinforce through its Public Affairs activities. LINX has a presence at seven sites around London, all connected by secure fibre links. The extent and resiliency of the network will be further increased this year with the addition of three new points of presence.
