Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq:EQIX) announced its plans to acquire a new data center property in the Los Angeles area, along with expansion plans for an existing facility in the Silicon Valley.
The new Los Angeles facility will allow Equinix to respond to accelerating regional demand within the rapidly growing digital media and entertainment industry. The property is located near one of Equinix’s El Segundo facility, and will be Equinix’s fourth Internet Business Exchange™ (IBX®) center in the Los Angeles area.
Equinix plans to close the purchase of the property by the end of June, at a price of $49 million. The company plans to open it for customers in the fourth quarter of 2008, accommodating approximately 1,700 cabinets in its initial phase. The facility features a total capacity of approximately 3,000 cabinets, and it will be directly linked to the three other Los Angeles area IBX centers through redundant dark fiber links managed by Equinix.
The move comes as demand for data center and network exchange services continue, outpacing supply. According to Tier1 Research’s Mid Year 2007 Internet Data Center Supply Report, North American data center demand is outpacing supply by a factor of two to one.
Equinix also announced its plans to expand its existing IBX center in Santa Clara, California by approximately 1,100 new cabinets. The expansion will provide options in the strategic Silicon Valley area, where the company already operates three other centers. Equinix intends to begin placing new customers in the expanded space in the second quarter of 2008.
